CONFORMATION

One of the things I take into consideration when selecting a performance horse is the overall view and structure of the animal, but I must emphasize the conformation of the head, neck, and shoulder areas. If a horse is put together well in these areas, he will much more easily accept the hackamore and bridle. He will be able to respond with that sought-after lightness when cued, while staying in proper balance throughout his body during training.

Since a horse uses his neck as a balance point, I look for a horse with a neck that fits properly onto his shoulders so he will be naturally soft in the poll and muzzle areas. What is desirable is a small throat latch with a nice arch to the neck that attaches to his shoulders on an even level with the withers. Wide shoulders tend to make a horse very heavy on his front end, which can cause hardness in the poll and muzzle areas. . . .
